Andres Serrano at the Israel Museum

I came prepared for this one. I came all ears - an american arist came all the way to Jerusalem - how long can be the way for me to one of my favourite museums?

I would drive miles for an artist's talk in a gallery, at a museum.

I entered the hall 10 minutes after the event had begun.  I was a bit late - but still could find some free seats - good places to see and hear the artist.

Serrano spoke about his early childhood in New York, back in the fifties. He is half  Honduran, half Afro-Cuban, and was raised as a strict Roman Catholic.

He first presented artistic works in the eighties. One of the many series he created was titled  Dread Black - it consisted of models who came to his studio to be photographed. Serrano is very intersted in the black and white theme.

The works are not completed unless you read the title - milk-blood, for example. Yet, all through his talk he consistently declares -  an artist  has no control over the viewer. Every work is always open to  many interpretations. The works are full of criticism, yet they are very precise.
